In 1953, the Sisters of Presentation of Mary celebrated their Golden Anniversary of presence in St. Charles. Arriving in Dover in 1903, they had taught thousands of students during their 50 years of dedicated service. At this time, Father Burque was elevated to the rank of Monsignor and his Golden Jubilee was celebrated on May 18, 1958. After 24 years as pastor, Father Burque died on June 12, 1963 and was buried at St. Charles Cemetery. His brother, Albert Burque, became pastor briefly but he died on January 19,1965 and was also buried in the priests’ plot.

In January 1911, Father Fabien-Gedeon Deshaies succeeded Father Richard. While pastor of Saint Charles, Father Deshaies was noted for his spiritual leadership and for his ability to reduce the parish debt. Due to the growth of the parish and the number of families registered, the original school had outgrown its space, therefore, in 1912, this building was replaced by a three-story building with an auditorium on the first floor, and four classrooms on the second and third floors. The Sisters of Presentation of Mary began what has been a long and devoted service as teachers of our youth in Dover. The new school was formally blessed by Bishop Guertin on November 22, 1914.

In the last half of the 19th century, immigration into the New England area had grown to include many nationalities. Among the people from other countries were a large number of French-speaking Canadians. Like the Irish before them, many of the French-Canadians were attracted to Dover by its textile mills where skilled workers had little difficulty in obtaining employment.
