Fourth Sunday of Advent PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 December 2009 16:25

On this last Sunday of the Advent Season, we are reminded that our joy is founded on the Incarnation. We rejoice in the fact that the God of all would take on the human condition out of love for us.

Joy, the emotion evoked by delight, good fortune, or exultant happiness, far supersedes everyday contentment. What Mary and Elizabeth experienced was a joy in the fulfillment of ancient longings. As we hear this Gospel proclaimed, the joy of Mary and Elizabeth can become our joy.

The scene in which they encountered one another can awaken the Spirit in each of us. Through the Holy Spirit we can catch a glimpse of the tremendous power of Jesus’ birth into the human family. This joy can fill our hearts and spreads to others.

This is the significance of Christmas, anticipated in families around the globe. When the busyness of Christmas catches us up in a web of distraction and dismay, we should recall the joy of these mothers. In remembering, we too can be filled with joy—a joy that will flow to all those we encounter.
